Behind the Art

Alison Sherrow is a mixed media artist living along the Front Range mountains of Colorado. Her creative journey began with photography, eventually evolving into encaustic and mixed media painting.

"Painting nurtures my soul. The process of bringing something entirely new into existence feels both exciting and magical. Time slows in my studio, and a deep sense of calm takes over—something I hope is reflected in my work."

Artist Statement

My work is a meditation on the living essence of nature. Each painting emerges from a deep fascination with the organic forms of trees and landscapes—abstracted to reveal both their intricate complexity and delicate simplicity. I explore the interplay of light, texture, and form, inviting viewers to pause and reflect on the quiet dynamism of natural growth and transformation.

I believe art reflects nature’s calm, inviting us to pause, breathe, and reconnect with ourselves, nature, and the present moment. A distinctive element of my creative process is the integration of ephemera—often including aged book pages—into my compositions. This practice forges a meaningful connection between my subject matter and the material itself. Just as trees transform sunlight and water into life, I use paper—once part of trees—to evoke a sense of history, memory, and impermanence. The layered textures of these aged pages enrich the visual narrative, merging the organic beauty of nature with the enduring echoes of time and literature.

Through each piece, I aim to create a space where contemplation and curiosity meet, encouraging an appreciation for both the natural environment and the transient beauty found within its cycles. I hope my work inspires a deeper, more personal dialogue about our relationship with nature and the delicate balance between growth and decay.
